Light up shoes for adults: four pairs, and the size trap on every listing

The short answer

Every adult light-up shoe on Amazon fails the same three ways: one shoe stops lighting, the battery dies early, or the size is wrong. You cannot fully avoid the first two — they vary from pair to pair. The third you can avoid completely, and it is the one that sends most of these shoes back.

🥇 Shinmax Fiber Optic Light Up Shoes

For: the full effect — the whole upper glows, not just a strip in the sole. 4.4/5 on 1,867 ratings, buyers flag quality, comfort and brightness as strengths, and its size labels are the most coherent of the five listings checked. Not for: anyone who wants the lights to be a detail rather than the outfit.

🥈 BosenHulu Light Up Shoes

For: the right size first time. It is the only listing where buyers rate the fit positively — true to size, "like slippers". Not for: anyone who needs a long track record: 775 ratings, on sale since 2023.

I built an online store for LED boots in 2026. I read the suppliers' size charts line by line, ordered samples, and decided not to ship — the reasons are here, and most of them are in this guide. I have not worn the four pairs below. Amazon now hides individual reviews behind a sign-in, so these verdicts rest on what every listing still shows publicly: the star distribution, Amazon's own review summary, the aspects buyers flag as positive or negative, and the size buttons themselves. The method is published.

Ratings and shares read on amazon.com on October 27, 2026. The 1-star share says more than the average: a 4.2 with 9% one-star ratings is a different bet from a 4.4 with 6%.

The size trap: two numbers, two different feet

Almost every adult light-up shoe is sold unisex, so each size button carries two numbers: "9 Women / 7.5 Men". In the US system, a women's size runs about 1.5 above the men's size for the same foot. So a button is honest when its two numbers are 1.5 apart, and every half size of difference beyond that is a shoe about 4 mm longer or shorter than one of the labels says.

I read every size button on five listings. Here is what they say.

ListingSmallestMiddleLargestWorst button
Shinmax 5 W / 4 M ✓8½ W / 7 M ✓13 W / 11½ M ✓ half a size, anywhere on the chart
BosenHulu 5 W / 4 M ✓9½ W / 7½ M ✓13½ W / 12 M ✓ 12 W / 9.5 M — one size, about 8 mm
SANYES 5½ W / 4 M ✓9 W / 7½ M ✓15 W / 11 M 15 W / 11 M — 2½ sizes, about 21 mm
Voovix (not picked) 6 W / 4 M ✓9 W / 7½ M ✓15 W / 11 M 15 W / 11 M — 2½ sizes, about 21 mm
IGxx 4½ W / 5 M9 W / 8½ M13 W / 12½ M 4.5 W / 5 M — 2 sizes, about 17 mm, and backwards

Three findings, in rising order of strangeness:

On these listings, you cannot know from the outside which of the two numbers matches the shoe. That is the point: a button whose two numbers disagree tells you nothing. What most listings do have, somewhere in their photos, is a chart with a foot length in centimeters or millimeters — SANYES and IGxx both tell you to check their chart before ordering. Measure your foot, heel against a wall, and buy by that length. If a listing gives no length anywhere, skip it.

Type the two numbers printed on the button you are about to click.

The other two failures, and what to do about them

One shoe stops lighting

This is the signature failure of the category, and it is structural. Each shoe has its own battery, its own circuit and its own switch, so you are not buying one gadget, you are buying two — and the pair is only as good as the weaker one. It shows up in the review summaries of three of the five listings: "one shoe stopping working" on the SANYES, "one shoe not working at all" on the Shinmax, "the left shoe lights up randomly" on the BosenHulu.

The fix costs nothing: the day they arrive, charge both shoes fully and run each one through every mode. A defect on a cheap circuit tends to show early. Order two to three weeks before the night, so a replacement can still arrive.

The battery quits early

The listings are remarkably consistent: up to six hours on a two- to three-hour charge, says the SANYES; up to six hours on a two-hour charge, says the IGxx; five to eight hours depending on the mode, says the Shinmax, the only one to admit the mode matters. The reviews are much less consistent. On the SANYES, Amazon's summary mentions lights that "only last about 30 minutes" and units "stopping after a couple of hours"; on the IGxx, both lights "that stay lit all night" and lights that "stop working after a couple of hours".

Same model, opposite results: that is a quality-control spread, not a battery spec. What you control is how you use it. A single steady color lasts far longer than flashing or color-cycling, so keep the light show for when it counts. And the charging cable is the part that disappears — a buyer of the SANYES low-top on Amazon's French store found none in the box, the same complaint I documented on the French version of this guide.

The four pairs in detail

Shinmax Fiber Optic LED Light Up Shoes

Best overall
For who: raves, festivals, dark dance floors — anywhere the shoes are meant to be seen. Editorial score: 4.5/5

Amazon: 4.4/5 from 1,867 ratings · 74% five-star, 6% one-star · fiber optic upper, rubber sole · mesh lining · women's 5 to 13 · split USB cable charges both shoes

The difference here is the technology. Most light-up shoes put a strip of LEDs in the sole; Shinmax runs the light through fiber optic threads woven into the upper, so in the dark the whole shoe glows rather than a band around its base. It is the most spectacular effect in the category, and it is what buyers respond to: quality, comfort, brightness, appearance and fun are all tagged as positive aspects, with quality alone mentioned 345 times.

Comfort deserves a note, because it is rare: 126 mentions, flagged positive. The upper is soft mesh with a cotton lining, and the listing's claim that you can dance a long time without getting tired is, for once, backed by its own reviews.

It also has the most coherent size chart of the five listings I read — no button is off by more than half a size. That does not make fit a solved problem: Amazon flags fit as mixed, and a two-number label within half a size is still a label, not a measurement. Use the centimeter chart. The weak points are the category's: reliability and charging are both tagged mixed, with some units failing to charge after one wear.

  • The whole upper glows, not just a strip in the sole — the strongest effect in the category
  • Comfort flagged positive by buyers, which almost never happens on these shoes
  • The most consistent size labels of the five listings checked
  • States honestly that runtime depends on the light mode — five to eight hours
  • The lowest 1-star share of the four picks
  • Charging and reliability are mixed, including reports of one shoe not working
  • Fit still mixed: measure, do not trust the button
  • Fiber optic is loud by design — it is the outfit, not a detail of it
  • Mesh and fiber are harder to wipe clean than faux leather

BosenHulu Light Up Shoes, mesh upper

Best fit
For who: anyone who has already sent one pair back for size. Editorial score: 4/5

Amazon: 4.4/5 from 775 ratings · 72% five-star, 7% one-star · on sale since September 2023 · LED sole, mesh upper, lace-up · white, black, grey, red · women's 5 to 13.5

In a category where every other listing has fit tagged mixed or negative, this is the only listing of the five where buyers tag fit as a positive aspect. Amazon's summary says buyers find them true to size and describes them as feeling like slippers; comfort is positive too. If your last pair of light-up shoes went back because of the size, start here.

The lights are in the sole, the switch is hidden in the heel strap, and the cable charges both shoes at once. Seven steady colors and four moving patterns, the category standard.

What keeps it at second place is the track record and the circuit. 775 ratings since late 2023 is a much thinner base than the leaders, and durability and charging are both tagged mixed: some pairs work well for weeks, others stop after the first use, and one recurring complaint is the left shoe lighting up on its own. Run the arrival test on both shoes.

  • Fit flagged positive — true to size, the rarest compliment in this category
  • Comfort flagged positive; soft mesh upper
  • Size labels within one size everywhere on the chart
  • Four plain colors that pass for an ordinary sneaker with the lights off
  • Durability and charging mixed, including pairs failing after the first use
  • A left shoe that lights up by itself, reported more than once
  • 775 ratings: a shorter record than the other three
  • LED strip in the sole only — less dramatic than fiber optic

SANYES LED Light Up Shoes, low-top

Longest track record
For who: women up to a 9.5 and men up to an 8 who want gold or silver glitter. Editorial score: 4/5

Amazon: 4.3/5 from 3,802 ratings · 70% five-star, 7% one-star · on sale since April 2017 · faux leather, cotton lining · white, black, gold, silver, and glitter black, gold and silver

Nine years on Amazon and still at 4.3 across nearly four thousand ratings: in a category where listings appear and vanish within a season, that longevity is the argument. SANYES's low-top is also the best seller on Amazon's French store, where I documented it for the French version of this guide — so its failures are well mapped on both sides of the Atlantic.

The glitter versions make it the natural pick for this site's readers. The low-top shape and faux leather read as an ordinary sneaker with the lights off, and appearance is its strongest positive aspect, with 595 mentions.

Two serious caveats. Durability is tagged negative, and Amazon's summary mentions lights lasting about 30 minutes on some pairs. And the size chart breaks above "9.5 Women / 8 Men", as shown in the table above: by "15 Women / 11 Men" the two labels describe feet 21 mm apart. On the French listing, one buyer ordered a 39.5 and received the equivalent of a 42. If you are above a women's 10 or a men's 8.5, buy by centimeters or buy something else.

  • On sale since 2017 with 3,802 ratings — the most established listing in the category
  • Glitter gold and silver versions, plus plain metallics
  • Reads as a normal sneaker with the lights off
  • Size labels coherent up to "9.5 Women / 8 Men"
  • Durability tagged negative, with some pairs lasting about 30 minutes lit
  • Size labels off by up to 21 mm at the top of the chart
  • Charging cable reported missing from the box
  • Reliability mixed, including one shoe that stops working

IGxx LED Light Up Shoes, glitter high-top

Most sparkle
For who: a themed night — disco, New Year's Eve — where glitter and lights both count. Editorial score: 3.5/5

Amazon: 4.2/5 from 3,384 ratings · 67% five-star, 9% one-star · on sale since August 2018 · #24 in Men's Fashion Sneakers · glitter high-top, hook-and-loop strap · ten colors including glitter gold and silver

This is the best seller of the four — ranked in the top 25 of all men's fashion sneakers on Amazon — and the only one that sparkles with the lights off: glitter uppers, metallic options, a retro high-top with a strap instead of laces. Buyers like the quality, the brightness and the fit across the toes; Amazon's summary mentions lights that stay lit all night and one buyer who found them perfect for New Year's Eve and Christmas parties, and notes they suit wide feet.

Then the problems, and there are three. It has the highest 1-star share of the four, at 9%. Durability is tagged negative, and the summary specifically mentions soles peeling off quickly. And the sizing is the strangest in this guide: the chart's women's numbers sit below its men's numbers, the reverse of every US system, and buyers say it runs small. Size up.

One more detail from the listing itself, worth knowing before a rave: the seller asks you not to run or jump in them, to protect the lighting system.

  • Glitter and lights together — the sparkliest pair here, lit or not
  • The best-selling listing of the four, on sale since 2018
  • Roomy across the toes; noted as suiting wide feet
  • Strap closure: on and off in a second
  • Runs small, on a size chart that is printed backwards
  • Soles peel; durability tagged negative
  • The highest 1-star share of the four, at 9%
  • The seller itself warns against running and jumping

Which pair for which night

Living with the battery

What to wear them with

Light-up shoes are the loudest thing in any outfit, so everything else stays quiet: black jeans or joggers, a plain top, nothing else that glows. In a dark room, the lights are what people see first and remember. If you would rather shine without a battery to watch, the sparkly boots guide covers glitter that stays on, and silver boots catch a dance floor's lights without any electronics at all.

Frequently asked questions

How long do light up shoes for adults stay lit?

The listings say up to six hours on a two- to three-hour charge; Shinmax gives five to eight hours depending on the mode. In practice it is a unit lottery more than a model property: on the same listings, Amazon's review summaries report pairs that stay lit all night and pairs that quit after half an hour. Flashing and color-cycling modes drain faster than one steady color. Charge fully the day before, not the afternoon of.

How do you charge light up shoes?

Through a small USB port hidden inside the shoe, usually near the heel or under the tongue, with the switch right next to it. Several listings ship a split cable that charges both shoes at once. The cable is the part that goes missing: a buyer of the SANYES low-top on Amazon's French store found none in the box. Check it the day the parcel arrives.

What size light up shoes should I order?

Not the number on the button. Most adult light-up shoes are sold unisex with a two-number label like "9 Women / 7.5 Men", and on three of the five listings checked here those two numbers describe feet up to 21 mm apart. Measure your foot in centimeters, find the centimeter chart in the listing photos, and pick by that. Between two sizes, go up: an insole fixes a shoe that is too big.

Can you wear light up shoes in the rain?

Avoid it. There is a lithium battery and a circuit in the sole, and the IGxx listing states plainly that the shoe is not water resistant. A puddle will not kill them on the spot; repeated damp will. These are night-out shoes, not everyday sneakers.

Can you dance and jump in light up shoes?

Dance, yes — the comfort reports on the Shinmax and BosenHulu are good. Jumping is another matter: the IGxx seller asks buyers not to run or jump in them, to protect the lighting system. If your night involves a mosh pit or a festival floor, expect the lights to be the first thing to fail.

What is the difference between fiber optic and LED light up shoes?

LED shoes have a strip of lights in the sole, so the glow is a band around the bottom of the shoe. Fiber optic shoes carry the light through threads woven into the upper, so the whole shoe glows. Fiber optic is more spectacular in the dark; a sole strip is more discreet and reads as an ordinary sneaker with the lights off.

Are adult light up shoes the same as kids' ones?

No. Most kids' light-up shoes flash on impact and run on a sealed battery that is not rechargeable — when it dies, the lights are done. Adult pairs are USB-rechargeable, switch on with a button, and offer several colors and patterns. This page only covers the adult kind.
